Cotton Candy's OP is whimsically upbeat, sharing pretty much the same vibes as both MCs themselves.

Youko and Airi reaching the coasts of Yokohama, and the former getting the idea of just trying her luck to fish for something while the latter does a walkthrough around...to find some seagulls being a potential for yakitori, only to find a robot hand? Too bad that Youko fished for what she wanted, but got her food eaten away by a shark, while Airi tries to power the robot up, though they are able to do so with the robot missing his lower half...and then just getting hamfisted by both girls. Though where he came from, Shiwa from Yokosuka, the girls can give him a lift there to seek his memories out, seemingly having a photo of his time with his family.

Together, the trio onward towards Yokosuka, and even breaking into folk song in the midst of the apocalypse, a forced restart shows the family that he had with his wife and two girls, it was a moment while it lasted. However, them encountering the same school of sharks, which turned out to be orcas, and the despair that wears on Shiwa's face, Youko remains their upbeat enthusiasm to look on the brighter side, and even chimes him in to join them, which he refuses to remain committed to his earlier cause, as Ichirou, to find his family, as his robot battery wanes into shutdown, plunging into the depths of the ocean.

There's just something about Myuk's songs, and her ED here is low-key subtle, but good.

A sad, but fulfilling journey for a passing side character, even if it seems typical on the side. Emotions a-tearing.

Another interesting and surprisingly touching episode.

I love the world-building in this show and all those minor details you can spot from the background.

This episode was so beautiful and touching.
Still no idea of what the apocalyptic event was but am sure at some point it will be revealed.

I love how much effort they have put into the depiction of the decaying environment, some few moments long shots have more details in them than the whole episodes of some other anime. The atmosphere builds heavily on it (and less on the shaningans of the girls), so it is kinda understandable. This time we got not only a few obscure references to the manga Yokohama Shopping Log (which sure as hell inspired whomever write this anime), but the story's setting became Yokohama itself. The author doesn't want for a moment to hide from where they have drawn their inspiration, but put it into the limelight and I like that.

“I’m home” making me cry two episodes in has to be a record for an anime original?? This was such a beautiful episode and ending.

I was just thinking to myself I don’t think I’d want to live on as a robot after something happened to my body, certainly not without my family who were my only reason for enduring that procedure in the first place. I’m so glad Ichiro got his memories back and got to be reunited with his family in the end. May they rest in peace.

We did get some glimpses of what caused the apocalypse in his memories. I can’t tell if that’s supposed to be a giant beam from the sky that caused an explosion or if it’s just a good old fashioned nuclear holocaust. Maybe AI went rogue since we have a society where people have come up with tech to make them functionally immortal.. doesn’t seem out of the question AI got to be super advanced and became sentient.

“I want to be with you forever, Yoko” I love these two sm. this was much better than the first episode for me, now I’m really invested in their journey and learning what happened.

A banger OP, plenty of sweet little slice of life moments, but also a more tragic backstory with our cyborg friend.
At this point I wonder what happened to the big sister? Not sure the imouto knows to be fair, so we'll see I guess.

Another very solid episode :)

the feeling of uneasiness i have watching this is something else, everything is so colorful, characters are cute and happy. but this is only on the surface, the environmental storytelling is fantastic, narrating a very sad and oppressing story with clues put in intelligent ways, for example from ep1 with what happened to mt fuji, the radiation levels mentioned by the type16 ai, and the amount of satellites in orbit. for less attentive people this anime will look like a nice and wholesome trip, but in reality it is not.

So it looks like the naval base at Yokosuka took a direct hit. So it was some sort of WMD apocalypse, given the warning about rad level from ep 1 almost certainly nuclear, but given the amount of satellites and possibly an orbital debris fall (or maybe a normal meteor shower, but I'm not ruling it out) it could have included other things as well.

The older Yoko from the beginning of the ED is currently making me think clone, as she was sweating compared with the known android in ep 1. Plus the introduction of the cyborg means the possibility of consciousness uploading, sister uploaded herself to be the future teacher?

So they were shelter based before getting out. The sea levels sure had risen quite a lot. Hell of a bait she caught to spawn that massive shark lol. Nice to be able to meet a fellow human being albeit a heavily meched one. The flashbacks sure added a new layer to the ep while also expanding upon Suzuki's past. The scene where they called the ocean idiot was hillarious. Being able to spend your last days in the place where you family passed was an excellent way to go. That final scene though was sad but beautiful.

So a bit more was revealed regarding what happened and it looks like the Yokohama port was directly attacked so maybe a nuclear war since Yoko was also in a bunker before coming out later on.

Regarding the cyborg dad, I figured he was going to throw himself into the water once the girls left because there was no way he could keep his battery charged up and I think he immediately started missing his family once his memories were loaded up.

I'm liking the world building of this series. Yoko and Airi going about from place to place is fun, but meeting a new character, who was a cyborg, added to that enjoyment for a while.

However, the melancholic and sombre feel was going to strike again sooner or later and this anime knows how to lay those themes into place so easily. The cyborg dad, Ichiro, was able to remember the event that changed everything to the apocalyptic situation that we see, so I can understand as to why he decided to stay behind instead of tagging along with Yoko and Airi. It was even more sombre after we see his battery level drop to 0% before falling into the ocean, as a way to reunite with his family. It's a sad, but powerful scene that captures the emotions so well.

The OP song and visuals is more upbeat, although I'm guessing with new locations for the girls to visit, the upbeat moments will be holding hands with the more sad moments. Just like Girls Last Tour, it does well to balance those moments really well, leaving me very satisfied. =)

I respect Ichiro decision to stay behind but forever will I wish that he stayed with Yoko and Airi on their journey. And the scene of him reuniting with his family got to me for the second time...seriously what a beautiful scene...

I was really not expecting much from this anime at first - maybe a comfy watch with nice visuals. Episode 1 showed me there's a lot more to it, and then this... it's a beautiful thing, and I'm looking forward to seeing what else they do with the setting, and how they flesh out the history of what happened.

I can't figure out why this anime is so bright. The whites are creating these soft glowing halos making surrounding colors and lines feel blurry. Like sometimes the detail of the faces or the background are just hard to see like some giant light source off to the side is flashing down on the characters and they're absorbing and reflecting the light through their clothes and skin like some sort of freak "ray-tracing" setting in a video game being set too ultra max and the graphics card can't handle it.

THIS IS WHY I WATCH ANIME, great damn episode.

I apologize for calling it a copy of Girls Last Tour. I was not familiar with your game, Shuumatsu Touring.

I had a feeling they would dive into the robot guy's past, but damn I was not ready for how beautiful and sad it was going to be.

They hinted at it in the first ep, but definitely now confirmed it was a full nuclear exchange.

When Ichiro's memories started to reboot while they were going through the tunnel, I was worried it was going to turn him evil; a bit like the reactivating APC in episode 1. Fortunately that wasn't the case but it's still a bit of a shame that he chose death over travelling with the girls.

It seems nobody discuss, the apocalypse could be a result of ongoing war, there was an attack on port, and military can't afford any escorts and emergencies for civilians. From AI controlling APC to military cyborg, what else will they find on their journey, and what's left after the war.

@Kelvin19192 Though we saw military equipments shown in both episodes I don't think it was necessarily the war that collapsed this society. We got a lot of shots of the destroyed cone of Fuji, which seems to have blown itself apart like Mount Helens did and the water levels of the oceans have risen drastically. It was most likey these and other until now not shown environmental changes that distruped every day life, and of course war might have followed in their wake, but most likely was not the main factor. We will see, though it could be we will never get a definite answer just environmental clues.

Well, they obviously had some better technology when the last war finally happened.
"You Idiots!"
edit: Whatever those are in orbit, they are huge to appear so bright in a twilight sky. My suspicion is they are orbital habitats. There could be millions of people up there. They have no desire to come down to the slums of Earth.

Conton Candy has given us another beautiful op after Snowdrop from Rascal doesn't dream of..last season.
So we have mutated Orcas about the size of a whale and it seems we may have many mutated animals judging from the op.
So the world's in this state not just 'cause of war but the environmental changes as well.
It's sad what happened to Ichiro. Are Airi and Youko the only living persons in this world now ?

The beginning of the show was too light hearted, it's like the girls hadn't realized in what situation they are.
It slowly becomes dark with the introduction of a broken android and his inevitable fate, such a sad underwater scene.

I think theyre starting to sprinkle in some more of the scifi mystery aspect around Yoko too like when she was talking to her Older sister in the past? Okay, but one thing I do not understand:

If the main character hasn't ever seen another human in person until this cyborg, since her traveling companion is a robot and she has only spoken to the older girl (the one who is either her sister or to whom she refers to as a sister) through a screen via phones/computers, then I assume that is due to the apocalypse and the apocalyptic event or series of events must have happened before she was born or when she was still an infant.

If that is the case and it's been that long (assume she's an early-mid teenager now of 14 - 16 years old), then how is the internet service still in working operation to be able to look up maps online on her smartphone?

@WatchTillTandava

We just don't know at this point, but the technology level before the apocalypse has to be very advanced to have androids and cyborgs be commonplace, for now I'd assume that whatever communications network exists in this future is automated to the point it can sustain itself even without human intervention, at the least we've seen that the sky is completely covered in a grid of satellites.

Second seasonal anime that made me cry, but this time it only took 2 episodes. First one was Jiisan Baasan Wakagaeru and I was able to hold my tears until the last episode at least.

I lived in Yokohama for 20 years, but most of the tourist attractions are concentrated around the port area. I lived in an inland residential area completely removed from tourism.
It was a pure commuter town with absolutely no tourist attractions. While extremely convenient for daily life, the high cost of living and dense population made it a difficult place to live comfortably unless you had considerable financial means.
