I'm wanting to check out some more anime from the 70s and am looking to gather some opinions on what some of the more interesting stuff out there is. Any suggestions at all will do, I don't even know where to start, other than with mecha. Thanks for any replies. If this belongs in the recommendation thread, sorry about that. Read the OP and it didn't seem like my question quite belonged there.

A thread only of 70s recommendations is also welcome.

Just watch the most important and influential names first and then go deeper afterwards.

I second Versailles no Bara recommendation along with the other Osamu Dezaki works, Ace Wo Nerae, Ashita No Joe, Ie Naki Ko... Osamu Dezaki basically shaped anime stereotypes and his seventies works are masterpieces. Ashita No Joe isn't fully english subbed yet.

World Masterpiece Theater Series are also recommendable if you're into Ghibli, that's basically where Ghibli spirit was first born, pretty much because they had Isao Takahata and Hayao Miyazaki in their ranks among others.
Awesome series here: Heidi, Marco, Perrine Anne Of Green Gables, Dog Of Flanders... If you're not into this series and you think they are children anime, I dare you to completely watch one of them. Heidi is currently being fansubbed.

Speaking of early Miyazaki, Future Boy Conan is also obligatory.

If you're into mecha then you probably heard of Leiji Matsumoto series too, they're not mecha, but are mostly set in space: Space Battleship Yamato, Galaxy Express 999, Captain Harlock...

Go Nagai name is also big and also shaped some genres, aside his well known mecha series which you are probably well acquainted with, Mazinger, Getter Robo and on, you also have Devilman, Cutie Honey, Doronron... Kickass openings, all episodic fun. Did set a lot of cliches in genres that still there remain today.

For more episodic random fun, Lupin is obligatory, specially the second series.

Other series in the vein of Go Nagai series are the Tatsunoko Productions series, well Go Nagain was involved in some, hence the Go Nagai feeling too. Also kickass openings and episodic action packed fun. Cashern, Gatchaman, Yatterman, Tekkaman.

These are the top names that popped of the top of my head, it already can give you an idea of what's there as well leave you with your hands full for now.

Unfortunately there are a lot of stuff that is left aside because there's a lot of 70s good series that remain without english subs.

Out of the WMT side, I would like to add Rascal Raccoon to that list.

Another relatively unknown series, but a good 70s series is Sasurai no Taiyou.

Not technically a 70's anime since it came out in '69, but Ninpuu Kamui Gaiden is definitely worth checking out if you're into ninjas and such.
AnimePast - The behind the scenes look at anime & manga fandom of the pre-mid-90's era.

Mobile Suit Gundam? Very late, but it should still count.

I'm still waiting for Ashita no Joe to get subbed to watch it myself.

Does anyone have an opinion about Candy Candy?

I left that aside, because we don't have subs. Definitely on of my top WMT series to watch (someday, with subs or not).

Thanks much for the suggestions, I'll be looking into a good deal of these. The World Masterpiece Theater stuff in particular caught my interest. I'm pretty familiar with Go Nagai, Tatsunoko, and mecha stuff, but I was looking for something a little different. Some of these World Masterpiece series seem to be just what I was looking for so thanks much for pointing that stuff out.

I am thinking I'll give Marco a watch very soon. I'm interested in A Dog of Flanders but I might be too much of a pansy to watch it, I have a huge soft spot for dogs and I have a good feeling some heart strings end up being tugged at the end.

Ninpuu Kamui Gaiden... I've had interest in that as well but it's not subbed is it? I can't even find raws for it.

From the few I've seen so far and things I hear about the rest, and the images almost always giving it away, yeah pets are a pretty big part of a lot of WMT shows. If you want one that has a very strong bond with its animal characters definitely check out Nobody's Boy Remi. Like Rob said above it's another one directed by Dezaki, who did RoV, and a bunch of other classics. It doesn't get much better than this!

That one needs subs, if only for the hilariously over the top rage quit scene with the main character in the Christmas episode.
