since this is a club for fans of magical girl shows, I thought it would be good to start a discussion board with this topic ^^
I have a few favourites:
1. Princess Tutu: I like it because it takes the magical girl and fairy tale stereotypes and turns them on their heads. Plus the story is very addictive, and you won't be able to stop watching it once you start. Also I love how developed the personalities of the characters become.
2. Cardcaptor Sakura: One of my very first anime, and I still love it. Just so cute. And it doesn't get boring or repetitive at all (at least for me). I still love to watch it.
3. Hime-chan no Ribbon: it has a lot in common with CCS, but it's a rather old anime, so if anything, CCS borrows from Hime-chan. The main characters have a similar relationship to Sakura and Syaoran, but Hime-chan is a lot less oblivious. There is no collecting motif, and it's more of a romantic comedy with a magical girl as the star, than a magical girl show.
4. Gakuen Alice: I consider this a magical girl show, but it is a bit of a stretch. It is also very similar to CCS, but also very different. If you like CCS, chances are you will like Gakuen Alice too. The anime doesn't tell the whole story, so you will have to read the manga.
5. Pretear: another really engrossing magical girl anime. This one has one magical girl and seven guys/boys (who are also magical ;]). Very cute and I just loved the ending (both manga and anime). Also I liked that the manga and anime told a slightly different story, so I didn't feel like I was watching something I already read. (thanks for reminding me about this one Ricea ^^)
6. Nanoha: I like all three seasons, yes even season three. What I find interesting about Nanoha is that it's a shounen magical girl show. I liked the fights, and the characters had interesting back stories. A very action packed magical girl show with a bit of ecchi fanservice. If you can handle that, then you'll probably like it too.
7. Earth Maiden Arjuna: I can't believe I forgot about this! It's on my top 10 favourites too DX Juna becomes the avatar of time and must help the earth. This is one of the few mahou shoujo that is also very deep and philosophical. It deals with the current ecological crisis and questions our modern food processing processes. It puts forth some very interesting premises, and it's the closest in my eyes to anime being philosophical. Most anime are symbolic, they do not present structured arguments with proofs; Arjuna actually presents premises and gives evidence as to why its premises are correct. It's not structured, but it doesn't just fling images and ideas at you without any grounding. I really love it =)
8. Ojamajo Doremi: I've only finished watching the first season and a bit of the second season, but it's really grown on me and it has become one of my favourites. The best way to describe this would be magical girl meets slice-of-life, since the main focus is on the lives of the girls, with them using magic to try and solve problems in their lives, some times with disastrous consequences. While this is aimed at children, I thought the anime was so well done that anyone could enjoy it. There are a few episodes with subtle family value preaching, which I dislike, but even so, the anime is really great. |
