General Video Game Discussion

Hey, folks! The purpose of this thread is to create discussion related to gaming. I know we have quite a number of gamers in this club and hope we can share our enjoyment of this hobby together.

Feel free to discuss related topics that come to mind for example whether it's about what you're currently playing, how you got into gaming, your favourite genres and games, upcoming releases you're looking forward to or anything else :)

I've always loved the Favourite Games discussion. I've always noticed that people have found it extremely hard to make a Top 5 or Top 10 video games :P . I actually find it pretty easy to do so.

I do have a question to ask of everyone though...And its a controversial one to ask straight off the start.... gulps

So guys...Are you Console or PC? And why do you prefer that? (without saying the other is shit and having a go at it of course)

Did you see this years E3? They outdid everybody, just with the number 4. Oh and this:

I've always sticked to certain games and not play other games.

I prefer PC. I was a console gamer in my childhood but nowadays I only play on PC.

I dont think E3 is a good way to judge how well a company does though? Its more of a commercial event now instead of being about showing off good games and consoles. I compare it to Wrestlemania in WWE. Yeah its cool and a dream to go to , but its more about the spectacle than the actual product now.

Oh, cool. Guess I have an excuse to use the forums now. I prefer console, but I don't mind PC, either. I'm also a Nintendo fanboy. I'm currently playing through Breath of the Wild (still) and on PC I'm playing Half-Life: Opposing Force because after about 3 months I finally managed to make some progress.

I started on console, but got lucky with a low price for a very nice PC and I'll only go back for exclusives and to play with some friends, not to mention my controller's been commandeered by a friend and I still haven't gotten around to picking it back up.

Really though I play PC now in part because a 2 year Dota addiction tied me to it and in that time I've picked up a lot of cheap games in steam sales. Now I'm gradually playing them. I'm far more used to mouse and keyboard now, there's a huge variety of stuff to play, the system gives you more options of how to play your games. it's weird to think about paying a subscription for multiplayer anymore. I did enjoy being able to chill on a sofa with a controller in my hands in the past though so --PC master race-- (I have no actual prejudice against console or more casual gamers whatsoever).

I personally prefer consoles and handhelds for the ease of knowing I can pick up games and not worry about system requirements. I mean that's coming from someone that isn't very tech savvy in general though haha. I do have an interest in playing more PC games but admittedly I'm very much enjoying the exclusives on PS4 at the moment.

PS4 has some really good looking stuff out that isn't available on PC. When I get my controller back I'm thinking Nioh looks like my kind of game, anyone played it? I loved the original Half-life when I played it a couple years back @SebazWorld btw.

I've personally always preferred consoles over PC. I've played console from when I was younger up until now.

I was an Xbox type of guy before I made the switch over to PS4 this year and I am really glad I did.

@ROFLross has played Nioh. I received it as a birthday present back in February but haven't got around to it yet. I did play a demo that I think was put up for a weekend. It's very much in the vein of the Souls series with a mixture of things like Ninja Gaiden (given the developer is Team Ninja) and Onimusha.@TheRealBailey_

I'm playing Tales of Symphonia on the PS3 at the moment. I bought a bunch of Tales game in the PSN sale awhile back quite cheap, only ever played the first one (Tales of Phantasia) so I figured why not?
The gameplay mechanics remind me of playing Star Ocean which is expected given that Yoshiharu Gotanda created the Tales series and he's the current tri-Ace president. I've spent a lot of time wandering around so I don't feel like I've got to the story all that much yet.

I was also playing The Witcher 3 but I've stopped for now. I'll get back to it when I can, same with Bloodborne.

I'm trying to think of what else. Oh, I also played Child of Light which felt fairytale like with all the rhyming and atmosphere, pretty short game but I find breaking up longer games with shorter ones sometimes to be helpful. I felt the artstyle was also very pleasant to look at.

It's good. I haven't got around to finishing it though and there is now DLC out for it too. (I think the DLC is out, or it is soon.) When I do play it again I will probably restart it. Don't think it's difficult to co-op on the game with someone you know, which is good.

It is very much like Dark Souls, but unlike Dark Souls, there are missions that you can just replay over and over again. I think the game is just as hard as Dark Souls to play, many BS deaths and dodging.

If you like Dark Souls, get Nioh.

I really like both the console and PC and I do actually use both for games a lot.

If I have to pick one, I'll probably go with PC. It was where my love of gaming started and developed. I enjoyed strategy games and MMORPG's in particular and a keyboard/mouse setup is more natural for those, but also for a wide range of other games in my opinion. The availability of mods and cheaper games (back then anyway) also add to my preference.

Though I do feel the need to credit consoles as well. I think console gaming from the PS3 onwards has taken my interest in gaming to the next level. Strong exclusives, zero hassle over compatibility/specs and ease of playing online/co-op make it hard not to love my console too.

As for games, I'm playing at the moment, there is quite a wide range. On the PC, I've been playing Warframe, Civilisation 6, Portal Knights and on my PS4, it has been NHL 17. However, with the steam sales up and a number of games I'm interested in, being released soon, my list is set to change quite dramatically.

I'm a console kind of person... started on my DS as you do (because Nintendo for a six year old was incredible) and few years ago bought myself my first Xbox. I'm not a hardcore gamer and actually have Xbox games I haven't even taken out of the plastic wrapping yet even though I've had them for over a year. Oops.

I mostly don't play Xbox because everyone I know has PlayStation apart from my cousin. And also setting it up is a pain in my ass that I can't be bothered to deal with. Every so often I go back to my DS out of sheer nostalgia, mostly to replay my old Pokemon games but occasionally other games as well.

The only game I play on my PC is Sims 4. First Sims game I ever had, bought it last year, made tonnes of progress until my laptop decided to delete my save file. Since then I've rage quit and haven't played it again because I'm just too damn stubborn. I like free online games as well because they give me an excuse to just chill out with my music on in the background.

I probably shouldn't even be posting in this forum because I don't play games that often, but oh well.

Excellent idea for a thread! @Halfsleeper

@nottheplan Yeah, this is just about discussion, however much you play isn't a concern :) I very rarely play on my Xbox too nowadays, I think i've brought 3 games in the 2 years i've had mine xD

As for myself, I generally only play (car) racing games. I tend to only stick to Forza 6, Project CARS and F1 2016, and whilst I have a wheel and pedal set up I have no constant place to set it up :( I am looking forward to the new Life Is Strange game though.

Thanks @ROFLross, think I'm sold on it for when I get playing on PS4 again. @Okazaki-Nagisa I've been avoiding Dota before it claims more hours from my life, so instead I spent a while playing Chivalry, which is fun but broken, and more recently some Civ V brave new world and Insurgency, both of which are great. Still barely dented my Steam library full of games bought in sales.

Is NHL worth getting? I will probably wait for the NHL 18 edition cause yanno. Every year updates but the games are usually a good way to get into the sport as it were. How i got into NFL and Basketball so. Plus i need a break from Fifa.....I play it too much for my own good -_-

I think it's an excellent sports game, it's a nice change from PES/Fifa for me as well. The changes from previous years are incremental as you are probably familiar with yourself. But I do think it is the best NHL to date.

For non hardcore ice hockey fans I would say get NHL 17 since it is really cheap. It's fun and a good enough introduction to the sport, without hurting your wallet. But if you're very intent on actually getting into the sport, then clearly buying the newest edition with the correct teams, wages, up to date stats, etc will be the logical choice. I would still wait for a price drop of some kind though.

I'll second Bioshock, although it is the only game out of those that I've played. It is good though

I've never been a huge gamer, played through a few 360 games such as all 3 Bioshocks, Borderlands, Far Cry 3, and a few CoD's. JRPG wise I'm not gonna lie I've always liked Pokemon and have played through every handheld console game up till the most recent Sun and Moon, trying to find time to change that haha. I also had Bravely Default which I was quite enjoying but I lent it to a friend who lost it lol.

One game I am playing through atm is Persona 4 (for the 2nd time actually, true ending this time fam) which I initially got into because someone told me to watch the anime.

I recently finished Utawarerumono:Mask of deception. Its a nice VN that breaks up gameplay with some turn based combat, can anyone recommend something similar on PS4?

Or just any decent game with turn based combat where you can move across the map, kind of like fire emblem I think?

Tried playing Danganronpa too, couldn't get on with it. Controls were annoying and honestly I'm not a fan of the art style. Other than that I will be playing Sword Art online hollow realization in a couple of days.

Strategy/Tactical RPGs have that kind of combat that you mentioned.

Tokyo Twilight Ghosthunters is the only other one that comes to mind VN wise at the moment on PS4 that also has SRPG elements. I think you'll have to wait for Mask of Truth unless you're willing to play on PC - https://vndb.org/g339?fil=tagspoil-0.tag_inc-339;m=0;o=d;s=rating

As for your second question there's Valkyria Chronicles Remastered, Grand Kingdom, God Wars: Future Past, Disgaea 5, plus The Banner Saga that you might want to have a look at.

Well, Steam sales are almost over so I was bound to ask this question :P

Has anyone ended up buying anything?

I decided not to since I rarely game on PC and have enough of a backlog on consoles as it is (waiting longer won't hurt). The PSN sales also changed and Yakuza 0, 4 and 5 popped up on sale. I did a bad thing and couldn't resist, but I figure if I play 0 now then it'll be in time for Kiwami at the end of August.

I ended up resubscribing to FFXIV to have a go on that for a change but I didn't buy anything during the Steam sale. The remastered FFXII Zondiac Age will be getting my money soon and I still have Persona 5 to complete... all the while praying to the RNG gods to let me get best girl (Saber Artoria) in Fate Grand Order without spending any real life money.

Also, I agree with your recomendation of Valkyria Chronicles. I absolutely adore that game. I think there is a new V.Chronicles coming this year on the PS4 too.

Watched the reveal live during EVO! Jubei finally playable in BlazBlue too after X-Amount of years of being in the story.

"After the multiplayer game is started, handy carpenter and builder Robin will arrive on the farm and put up three cabins. Each of which will house a farmhand controlled by a friend.

Like the player, friends will be able to farm, fight, fish, forage, mine and almost everything else the main player can do, such as take part in festivals. Each will also have their own inventory and when not connected, it can be managed by using the chest in their cabin."

Been waiting for this for soooooo long. Was really hoping it would come earlier, but ultimately I'm just glad to finally see more details.
