Kou tried to weaken her talismans to create an opening for Huazi. We got a bit more of Huazi's backstory. This most likely will be the final fight.

Is it fair to judge someone for murder if they mostly exist outside the moral spectrum? To extrapolate: is it fair to judge shenguai by human standards?

Something I don't think anyone else has mentioned is that Taotie is a glutton and stickler for treasure, both in Kaedegami and in Chinese mythology. This is worth noting, because it makes Huazi giving her a feather all the more impactful.

Huazi's feather likely caused her to realize that even ordinary and useless things can be "treasure"; you could argue that she discovered the value of genuine human connection. Chiyou's memory of Taotie's tendency to "corrupt those weak of spirit in her lust for riches" absolutely could have changed during the time she was trapped by the seals. Taotie becomes associated with a troupe, possibly to search for Huazi. She "loves dance and values beauty above all else," which also connects to Huazi.

All of this makes her statement that humans "never truly give [shenguai] what [they] desire" hit deep. What Taotie truly desires is Huazi's companionship... This bit of writing is much more subtle and complex than I expect from a shōnen series; I like it.

As usual, here's some context:
This chapter didn't really have any new things from Chinese mythology, but I just realized that Taotie's design is almost certainly inspired by the design from Touhou of Yuuma Toutetsu, who is themselves a – you guessed it – taotie. Yuuma Toutetsu has goat horns and white hair, which Taotie from Kaedegami also has. As far as I'm aware, these specific traits for a humanized version of the Taotie aren't actually specified in Chinese mythology.

This was lit, specially that double spread. Love it when stories tackle stuff like this.
