The only reason people thought it was particularly bad back in the day was because
1. it was hyped to no end by the licensee, but most importantly
2. they used to not license generic crap back then, so when a show that was just bland and forgettable came out in the West, among all the Akiras, Yamatos and Robot Carnivals it just seemed irredeemably shitty.

in this day and age, considering the amount of equally boring things that younger fans watch on a regular basis, it's really not a stand-out 'legendarily bad' OVA in any way - it's just bland.

I expected much more to happen, and, well, it didn't. He escapes, he beats up a gang boss, he helps a commando, he goes with them into a control tower thingy, he fights a robot, he kills the commando, then turns back on a world-endy-thingy. Weeee~ Boring.

And why's everything so damn dark? Too many spots in this are way too dark to really get what's happening (robot battle at the end, especially).

I wanted it to be fun in a 80's cheesy kind of way, but really, it kinda fails there. Points for the character design and silly goriness, but that's about it.

The final battle is weird because there were clearly skilled animators working on it, but the colors and the way it's all storyboarded utterly ruins it.
