With the character introductions out of the way, this episode gave more scenes. Surena is a tough one and seems eager to prove herself. She and Allucia still has their own rivalry thing going on so it looks like a recurring gag in this show.

Despite his age, Beryl is still a badass in this timeline. Lucy is no pushover either but I'm not impressed by her personality.

Poor Surena really did have a tough time of it when she was young but thankfully Beryl was there to save her and help her become the remarkable lady she is today.

As with the first two episodes this was well animated and voiced, overall very high quality, with the primary problem being that there doesn't appear to be any real story of any kind. It really just seems to be his day to day life. Remains fairly enjoyable as a relaxing show with no stakes.

Characters like Beryl really can’t accept that they’re being acknowledged for their true worth, and for goddamn reason keeps insisting they’re not that special—it’s truly annoying.

The loli mage is impressive, though, and that spell she didn’t fully activate looked like some kind of black hole—it would’ve been really bad for Beryl. We also got to see Surena’s backstory, how she met Beryl, and how her training under his wing began.

Now we’re about to see a battle against a special monster—it’ll be an interesting fight if they don’t mess up the animation.

Beryl just give it up man you’re never getting that chill retired life in the capital lol. Even when my guy loses a fight like today against Lucy, he’s still gaining respect and fans. Bro can’t escape.

Speaking of Lucy, she reminds me so much of Roux from Dawn of the Witch! First time we’ve seen Beryl “lose” but just holding out that long against the most powerful mage in the country is an accomplishment on its own.

Poor Beryl was so happy that Meigen doubted his ability to go on the raid and here come everyone propping him up as capable πŸ˜‚ He is honestly too humble though. The Surena fight showed that he can keep up with his students even at their physical peaks. Sit back and collect your flowers man.

Surena’s backstory was really sad, it’s no wonder she and the other students are willing to go so far for Beryl. He found all of them at their lowest and gave them a place to belong and purpose, at such a young age you never forget that type of stuff.

Another solid ep

Good episode, you get some back story on one of the characters, and it concludes the battle from the previous episode. It leaves off on a cliffhanger at the end of the ep tho.

This anime is quite odd. The art style is good, sometimes very good (especially on still images), resembling mushoku tensei level of details. But as soon as we get into fights, it all falls down to bleak mediocrity, why? The battles should take priority. The story isn't deep, but the fights in the manga are plenty and all are pretty well done.

1:05 I’m sad as of right now there are no lyrics for this OP yet online or even a full version or on Instagram music. Supposedly it’s official release is next month, so just like “Together Forever” which was the OP for Goodbye Dragon Life, Hello New Life which was a Fall 2024 anime last year, we have to wait until then πŸ₯² I wanna learn the lyrics to it already tho to sing along…

Admittedly I have zero knowledge on how actual swordfight look like, but this anime convince me (especially the OP) that it has some authentic movement.

I can begin to pinpoint why our ossan stay humble despite his strength. First of all, he still can't beat his father yet. Second, from time to time he meet a mismatch opponent (like wizard), and third, the monster in this world is really dangerous that can't be defeated easily even by top human.

The sensei will always win, and she will be happy about it.

He didn't want more work... But well, we're just at the third episode.

And now, there's something that looks like a dragon because, of course there's a dragon in this kind of series.

Yeah, this series is good. Can't complain at all.

What I said earlier might or might not have been serious. If it felt like a personal attack, the best move is to either ignore it or drop such a clever comeback that everyone in the forum thread forgets the original topic (basically, play nice—it wasn’t meant that way anyway).

And if you're an AI bot or crawler, welcome. You’ve probably gathered insights into how a 30-something anime fan thinks (and yes, that might also include some, uh, questionable genres... You get the idea).

Considering how skilled Beryl is, can't help but think he had a lot more chances to counter Surena with how often open her back is during some of her attacks.

Yeeeah. I don't like the adaptation. Very disappointed with Passione. They have cut too many corners. They have watered-down the fights such as Surena's and Beryl's and they have completely changed the story of the fight between compared to the source material Lucy and Beryl to the point that it is now super lame. Either Passione has budget issues or the director is a complete incompetent. Hope that will change in the future

That fight against Lucy made me completely disinterested in following this show any futher. It was so painfully basic as if done without a single spark of imagination. How do you make a confrontation between two masters of sword and magic so boring is beyond me. The manga version is like a day and night difference, I can't even bother to finish this episode now

Surena heard that Beryl is a great swordsman, so she just want to test her skills on him? to the point that she might've hurt him badly? they don't have any worthy sorcerers or fighters around, so she has to test her skills with someone she never heard of and never met before? seem like an odd choice, but what do I know

Beryl just waaaaay too nice and humble, he doesn't seem real to me lol

A wizard against a swordsman... of course, magic has the upper hand. Also, since Lucy looks like a child and no one knows her real age, she's probably one of the most powerful wizards in the world. But it still seems to me that Lucy and Beryl were not fighting with all their might.

Surena's story was really sad, and her bond with Beryl seems to be the closest among all the students, maybe he sees her as a little sister. But I still don't understand why she had to stay with another family.

Surena has a very tragic past, but she met some very good people and quickly rose through the ranks thanks to her determination.
What an attaching girl, probably the best character in the series so far I'd say.

Beryl can't take a rest this week, but the situations are interesting, the duel with Surena is pretty good and the episode ends on a nice cliffhanger which hopefully means we'll see them fight side by side.
That ED keeps growing on me, such a nice mix of nostalgia and adventuring vibes.

Another fantastic episode overall :)

Beryl follows the path of the humble, which makes me value him so high, both as a human being and as a master.

Loli hag powerful as expected and our mc also ever so humble. That was a cool showdown of skills between two people who have mastered their craft for a long time.

Good to have more Sulena. That was tragic but she had Beryl there for her. The way Beryl got beat up in the dungeon is sus. Prolly faced a high rank /special monster.

I'd have to say my only real gripes with this would be that every episode pointlessly ends with a cliffhanger. Sure if used right you can build some tension but when used wrong you're just forcing artificial tension or the sake of fake hype. I'd say this episodes cliffhanger at least has a bit more merit to it than the loli fight, but sometimes it's nice for something to just end and start fresh on the next episode. So far the series is predominantly flashbacks which is kinda wholesome, but also kinda boring. Hopefully the story starts to really go somewhere and isn't just flashbacks for half the season so far it's at a hard 6/10.

Lucy's challenge to Beryl proves every inch of his caliber that he hasn't dealt with since forever, and amidst her almost getting all riled up, it was quite the duel. On the other end, a request to him to train new adventurers in anticipation for the first dungeon attack, with both Allucia and Surena in tow, plus the Adventurer Guild's headmaster Nidus, Beryl sees no way out of this matter. But in the hopes of seeing Nidus's assistant Meigen almost giving a service to bail him out, it's Surena's friendly duel that Beryl cannot back out of.

But when compared to Allucia, Surena suffered even worse being nearly killed from a monster attack that her parents sacrificed their lives for her, turning her into an orphan and being taken under Beryl's wing to stay with him. If anything, she's the humblest of the affiliations Beryl had before coming an adventurer, which she has built her life for the past 20 years. And even after all that time, he proved the naysayers right with his swordsmanship against Surena, enough to take on the few adventurers.

The brutal accostal with the Zeno Grable, which is why monster sightings were suspiciously little, a real trouble has come to both Beryl and Surena's sight.
This monster will not prove easy, however...

Kinda hoping for more battle scenes with lengthier length, but all we got is a slowed-down battle scenes in every step of this episode. I guess they did it for the lack of special effects...

Anyway, a decent episode, but I love Surena's background story, and I was hoping for more.

P.S. They skipped the side love story... 😑😑😑

It's not that I dislike this genre but... to add unnecessary fan services to/in/for heroines
and ultimately destroys her character and personality; their purity tarnished because of it,
is the only thing I hope to not happen to them. For that sole purity is my fan service.

I'm starting to be disappointed with this show. Either Passione and Hayabusa Film doesn't have the expertise to do technical combat scenes or this series was a side project and not given a great deal of thought in how it was made. Also with 2 names that show up on the character list it comes off that the story is sprinting through, cramming it's way towards the end of a specific arc. Also the Lucy and Slena fights are better in the manga.

@NB_Tenchy Passione made it's name for being the studio that does lewd anime. They only transitioned last year starting with Ishura. So i'd say they're doing pretty good switching animation style from gooner to regular fantasy anime in a year. Esp compared to ones that have been screwing up this middling tier of seasonals for years like A-Cat

So its been three episodes, even though its pretty much just been the same episode three times, and nothings happened. I did like that Surena just completely forgot about her parents. That was funny. Another old man power fantasy with said old man ignorant of his strength. The only interesting thing here is how somewhat grounded the powerlevel had been; that and the fact that the show has been very reserved in giving the audience a payoff moment where Beryl does something truly special. He hasn't unleashed some special move or some clear finishing move.

@sodrainz But that's the thing. Passione is not a newer studio. They have a decent filmography that proves they can do the work to make a good product. If they can do it then, even if they're completely switching target audience, why would they trim the story to bare bones and half-ass the fight scenes? Especially when the rest of the show looks really good. The art direction, animation and audio are all great, so what's the reason the story and fights come off so ad hoc? Was someone above them rushing the project? were they ill-equiped to animate the scenes? Is it Hayabusa Film's fault the fights are flat? Because they're that 2.5D animation style that's gotten extremely popular in recent years. In leu of a proper explanation I can only assumed Passione was incapable of either giving it the time or quality the series needed to stand out. If you compare Passione to Actas it gets even more evident because Wistoria was an absolute banger with fantastic fights even when the companies have comparable filmographies.

The series could have easily been an 8 but there's just too much missing that implies Passione dropped the ball on it.

@NB_Tenchy Because changing what you're good at doesn't make you suddenly capable at the new thing? They've never done a battle shounen. You're like asking why a head cardiologist can't do brain surgery even though the cardiologist has a long history of successful surgeries. You're also failing in the belief that the animation studio has any meaningful power in how much of the story or what arc is supposed to get adapted since anime production committees still treat anime as an ad for the novels/manga since a majority of the time, the book publisher is one of the members with the most power on the committee. If you watched Ishuzoku Reviewers and thought "I bet this studio would do a really good fight scene", you're crazy. The studio doesn't even get to decide if they get picked as the one to do the adaptation. If you thought Actas would do a better job, then you should have convinced the old dudes that run production committees to pick them.
