1) The feels and comedy in both of these series are top-notch 2) They both star an eccentric, mysterious main character that changes the lives of the people around them. 3) The themes of friendship, dreams, and being who you are are very prevalent here. I can't recommend these series enough! Personally, Sumire 16-sai!! is my favorite manga series. 

Some "akward" new student terrifies everyone at school, but is eventuallly acknowledged for having a golden heart, bringing everyone some of the best years of their lives.  

With the romance aside, everything else seems to be highly same. Both take place in a school, hilarity often (if not always) ensues when the characters interact with one another and tinge of life lessons appear here and there. Both are a definite must-read for those who want to enjoy a hearty laugh while still retaining a sense of bitter yet sweet nostalgia of happy bygone days. 

Students & teachers are taught valuable and heartwarming life lessons from an unexpected source…a tentacle monster / a high school girl marionette operated by a ventriloquist.
