I TRIED to like the series. I even tried to give myself a couple of weeks to see if it was just first chapter jitters, or if it was the series. And turns out, it was the series that was the problem within this situation. Now, there were TWO things that were redeemable about this series that made me not wanna drop it out right, even if I wanted to.
The things that are redeemable are (In my opinion):
- The character designs are cute/interesting. You can tell that the characters were made to be on the "cuter" side, and that does somewhat help.
- The premise of
...
the story. A story about two friends/rivals listening to the same late-night radio show on a Monday? AND it's a comedy series? That COULD have been up my alley.
But despite that, there was a LOT of that that made me not continue with the series. Those are
- The main character is good at everything BUT the comedy/the jokes he sends in not getting read out loud is irritating to me because comedy is SUBJECTIVE!!!
- The idea of a competition that requires jokes to be sent in and read off is just a bad goal to set for your MC.
- The fact that they are middle schoolers and listening to a late-night radio show. Like, I get that this is the equivalent of America's 7th-9th grades. But my point still stands, they need to be getting sleep for school.
- The fact that the male MC looks up to the Female MC because of how she gets more jokes read on the air. If there were other reasons (like academic or school extracurricular in nature) that the male MC looks up to the female MC for, that would be great. Hell, if the female MC were a HOST of a radio show, it would make the male MC look up to her make more sense.
- Finally, the personalities for the characters. Jokes not landing? That could be chalked up to being something lost in translation. But the personality is something that NEEDS to be there for people to care for the MC. And sure, the MC doesn't rub being good at everything in people's face, but that doesn't make them interesting.
Overall, I wish that Someone Hertz was a lot more interesting and well done. Heck, I wish that the two positives were able to make me want to read MORE of the series. But as it stands currently, I don't care about the series, and thus have dropped it.
